02 /What makes one sewer quote higher than another?

Two quotes for the same house usually differ because they price different scopes, not because one contractor is honest and the other is not. Five things explain most of the gap:

1. Where the work starts and ends. Foundation to property line, or all the way to the city main with a road cut.
2. Depth and surface. A 2.5 m dig under a concrete driveway costs several times a 1.5 m dig under lawn.
3. Method. Open-cut, lining and bursting move cost between excavation, equipment and restoration.
4. What is excluded. Permits, restoration, cleanouts and post-work video are often left out of low quotes.
5. How surprises are priced. Unit rates for rock, water and extra length — or none at all.

03 /How to get three sewer quotes you can actually compare

1. Get recorded camera footage

   Every repair decision should rest on a recorded video with distances and depth. Without it, each contractor prices a guess. See camera inspection cost.

2. Confirm the ownership boundary

   Ask your municipality where your responsibility ends. In Calgary, call 311. See permits and who pays.

3. Write one scope

   Start point, end point, surface to restore, cleanout wanted, post-work video required. Send the same scope to every contractor.

4. Ask the same questions

5. Compare line by line

04 /What should a fair sewer quote contain?

A fair sewer quote is a scope document with a price attached. If you cannot tell from the paper exactly what will be dug, installed, restored and proven, the price has nothing to anchor to. These are the ten items a complete repair or replacement quote carries:

A quote missing three or more of these is not ready to compare. Ask for the missing parts in writing, and remember that a higher total with complete scope is often cheaper than a low total with gaps.

05 /Who pays: owner, city or insurer?

Most Canadian municipalities make the homeowner responsible for the building sewer to the property line and take responsibility for the connection and main beyond it, though some cities put owners on the hook to the main.
